Impact of Recession on Arizona Nonprofits
June 26, 2008
It's never financially easy to be a nonprofit, but many are experiencing tougher-than-usual economic times lately. Cuts in the Arizona and federal budgets, an increased demand for services, the recent downturn in the U.S. economy and the severe contraction of Arizona’s economy -- are adding to the financial stress many nonprofits feel. Adding to nonprofits' economic reality is the psychological effect that news of a possible recession can have on individual donors.
Nonprofit fundraising tends to lag behind the economy by six to nine months, which suggests that nonprofits are just beginning to feel the full impact of current economic conditions.  What do the results of a nonprofit survey reveal about impacts already being felt? How are these impacts being reflected in the demand for training and technical support? How will planned cuts in the 2008 and 2009 state budget impact nonprofit in the next two years?
AGF asked several experts to help provide answers to these critical questions as well as assist funders in exploring what they can do to mitigate some of the most serious impacts.
