Youth Evaluative Learning Initiative

Two years ago, Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust and Valley of the Sun United Way embarked on an innovative initiative to help nonprofits gain the tools and knowledge to use data more effectively for improving operations and the quality of programs. This Evaluative Learning Initiative had three objectives:

  • Provide technology to nonprofits so they could easily capture and use data.
  • Allow nonprofits to define success for their programs and provide them with instruments to measure how they are doing.
  • Offer a safe space where organizations can share their findings and learn from each other.
The initial pilot focuses on eight after school agencies in Maricopa County. This session provides a background on the philosophy behind this unique capacity building approach.
