Mission Related Investments: Toward a Broader Philanthropic Toolkit

February 10, 2009
How can foundations and companies use all of their financial assets and other resources to maximize financial returns while creating the social change they want to see in the world? This session - specifically for corporate and foundation leaders, trustees, and investment advisors - highlighted recent progress of the mission-related investing (MRI) movement and market opportunities. In this session, one of the leading proponents of MRI's provided information on:

  • How foundations can broaden their impact by more closely aligning their investment practices with their institutional missions
  • How to source, underwrite and monitor endowment-quality, market-rate investments that support mission
  • How to assure that such investments are consistent with fiduciary standards and good financial stewardship
  • Why program related investments can be both a tool for social impact and for effective payout and asset management.
Our Speaker: Luther Ragin, Jr., The F. B. Heron Foundation
Mr. Ragin is Vice President for Investments at The F. B. Heron Foundation, a private foundation with assets of $250 million located in New York City. Prior to joining the Foundation in 1999, Luther was the CFO of the National Community Capital Association, a trade association of community development financial institutions that provide access to capital in low-income communities. Ragin's other significant experience includes eight years as CFO of Earl G. Graves, Ltd., and seven years with Chase Manhattan Bank, including three years as vice president of Syndications/Assets Sales for the North American Corporate Finance Sector. He currently serves on the board of Shared Interest, a New York-based organization that supports economic development initiatives in post-apartheid South Africa. Ragin earned his Master of Public Policy at Harvard and is a graduate of Columbia University's Executive Program in Business Administration.
