September 15, 2010 | Education Funders Affinity Group
This meeting will be devoted to a discussion of scholarships. We've recently polled AGF members and have compiled a list of those who provide scholarships which we'll share at the meeting. This session will provide participants with an opportunity to learn more about the types of scholarships being offered (as well as gaps), the processes used to select recipients, and best practices for supporting scholarship recipients. If you have any specific questions or issues you'd like to explore with your peers during this session, please call (602-977-2756) or email Tom Torretta. We will compile your comments/questions and present these for discussion at the meeting.

September 30, 2010 | The State of Latino Philanthropy in Arizona - Open to Nonprofits
While Hispanics have long supported informal charitable activities, they have not had a strong tradition of systematic or formal charitable giving. Currently, Hispanics represent 30% (2 million) of Arizona’s population, ranking Arizona fifth in the US in total number of Hispanics.

Back in 2005, the Arizona Community Foundation received a $420,000 matching grant from San Francisco based Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) to strengthen formal charitable giving among Hispanics. The successful project brought together major foundations, corporations and individuals to raise money for mid- and small-size Hispanic-led organizations.

The program on September 30 will provide a report on the Hispanics in Philanthropy Funder’s Collaborative project in Arizona as well as exciting new philanthropic entities that have evolved from this three-year endeavor. This includes the development of the Latinos Unidos Fund and Latina Giving Circle at the Arizona Community Foundation. The program will be open to nonprofits and funders. All who want to learn more about these exciting, positive developments in Arizona are invited to attend.

Panel Members
° Ricardo Torres, publisher/CEO, Latino Perspectives
° Tony Banegas, Program Officer, Arizona Community Foundation
° Belen Gonzalez, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust and Volunteer Coordinator for the Latina Giving Circle
° Delores Retana, Lead Consultant to AZ HIP Collaborative grantees (tentative).

October 13, 2010 | Philanthropy Awareness Initiative (PAI)

Research conducted by PAI suggests that philanthropy faces an awareness deficit among even the most engaged citizens. Only four in ten can name a foundation. Only one in ten can identify a foundation’s impact on an issue they care about. We’d expect those on the frontlines of community improvement to know something about foundations that exist to support their work. Most do not.

When our economy was booming, few worried that the public didn’t understand the important role of foundations. In fact many foundations considered it a misuse of funds to advertise their good works. However, in our current economic climate, governments are seeking under every proverbial “rock” for new revenues. Some view foundations with their billions of dollars in assets, as an appealing potential income source. It is essential that foundations make a concerted effort to increase public understanding of the important role they play in building/sustaining our social fabric.

During this session, the presenters will share more of PAI’s findings, and then explore what individual foundations across the country are doing and can do to increase public awareness and understanding of philanthropy. One focus will be on the unique role that trustees can play as foundation ambassadors. They will also address what foundations can do collectively to generate meaningful dialogue between grantmakers and leaders in the public and private sector.

Presenters
Mark Sedway, PAI Project Director
Marcia Sharp, CEO, Millennium Communications Group

Philanthropy Awareness Initiative is a short term R&D project that works with foundations and philanthropy associations to improve communications and outreach to influential Americans. The project accomplishs this primarily by tracking how influential leaders see foundations and identifying, developing and sharing ways foundations can communicate about their unique role, work and impact in American Society.

4th Annual "Art of Giving" Luncheon

The World Needs Your Kid

Raising Children Who Care and Contribute

ARIZONA GRANTMAKERS FORUM is proud to host a conversation with Craig Kielburger, the young, dynamic founder of Free the Children, the world’s leading youth-driven charity. His presentation will include lessons on nurturing families to care about the world around them. It will renew your faith in the capacity of young people to address global problems and inspire you and your family to get involved, as well as pass on that inspiration and action to others.

Craig Kielburger will share concepts from the latest book he co-authored with his brother - The World Needs Your Kid. Participants of all ages will:

° Be reminded that one person, no matter how young, can make a world of difference
° Demonstrate how small, everyday actions can make the world a better place
° Show how those same small actions can have a lasting influence on your child. After all, it is a proven fact that doing good for the world does a world of good for friendships, grades and self-esteem
° Provide everything you need to know to raise socially-responsible kids, lend a hand and change the world - all at the same time!
