AGF Members Present at the Neighborhood Funders Group Conference

At the Neighborhood Funders Group Conference in New Mexico, a gathering of over 200 national funders, AGF members presented information on opportunities for funders to invest in Arizona. They dispelled a few myths about Arizona, showcased the state's strengths, and focused on the great work that is already being done to improve our communities.

Embracing Public Policy as an Effective Funder Tool

Historically, most foundations have preferred to quietly go about the business of grantmaking, focused on enhancing communities and improving the life of residents. Many expressed an aversion to seeking the public spotlight, preferring to highlight the work of their nonprofit grantees. However, times have changed. Foundations now recognize that they play a vital role in the community, which must be properly understood by policymakers and supported by constructive public policies.

Equally disquieting to funders is the impact of government cutbacks on the nonprofit agencies they have been supporting for so many years. Many funders now recognize that they must better educate policymakers on the vital role of the nonprofit sectorin addressing the critical needs of our communities and the limited funding that foundations can provide relative to the growing needs.

Take Action

Now is the time for our voice to be heard. Now is the time to share the stories of the lives touched by our giving. It is the time to make time to educate those who will influence the laws and regulations that control the way foundations operate today and in the future. We must also take time to educate policy makers about the size and scope of the philanthropic sector, the specific role that foundations can play in strengthening our communities and the importance of developing stronger public/private partnerships to address our many issues facing our state and nation.
